I am experiencing the same thing on a '98 ST2, but the issue presented
itself while I was in the middle of a ride, so I can't see the plates going
from working to seized mid use. Clutch lever went from perfectly normal to
hard to pull to zero pull over the space of a few minutes (and perhaps four
or five pulls) - I ended up riding home 50 miles without a clutch (easy on a
dirt bike, but not too safe timing lights, and a challenge on a big cylinder
Duc).
I rebuilt the master - squirts fluid. Line is clear. Checked the slave and
the piston pushes with lever pressure, and retracts pushing manually (was
rebuilt 2 years ago). Rod spins in bearing fine. Pulled out springs and
pressure plate and rod on clutch side and nothing different visually with
plates, basket etc. Everything together, clutch lever will not squeeze or
disengage clutch. I'm stumped. And this 21 year old needs a run!
If someone has insight for Larry, I am also looking for a solution...

I had the exact same symptoms. I pulled everything apart on my 900SS as you guys did and sure enough, my plates were stuck together. I did put it away after a wet ride and then didn't ride it for a while. I separated them, sanded them down, then put everything back together. I put new fluid in but no matter what I did or how long I pump the Mity-Vac, the dang thing wouldn't bleed. Over the course of a week I took it all apart again, cleaned everything, checked everything, tried bleeding it, bleeding it, bleeding it. Finally, I threw in the towel and took it to the dealer. The tech took the bike, had it for about 10 minutes, came in and said he was just about done. He said the MC was dirty and clogged. DOH! I never thought to check that! He cleaned it out and was bleeding the system. Another 15 minutes and he was all done.
So yes, the plates can stick together and you will either need new ones or just sand down the old ones. But probably what you have is a clogged up MC.
Oh, BTW, after having owned this bike for over 23 years, while doing all the aforementioned clutch maintenance/trouble shooting, I learned a new trick on how to make the clutch pull easier . I used to have an aftermarket billet slave cylinder and that did make it easier but the O-rings kept leaking so I switched it back to a stock one, with the stock he-man clutch pull. When I reassembled my clutch, instead of putting all the springs and buttons back on, I left off three. It reduces the clutch pull just as much as an aftermarket slave cylinder. I've ridden several hundred miles with it like that with no problem. Excuse me if this trick has been expounded on before and is old knowledge, it was new to me! hahahahaha... I can't think of any negative side effects of doing this...are there?
Safe riding y'all!

Thanks for all the input. The plates and basket on mine have not had
attention in several eons, so basket is definitely notched and plates
certainly could be warped and/or stuck (though I was riding as normal at the
time, and it hasn't been out in the rain in a long time either). Nut was
not backed out. My first step was to clean and rebuild the m/c, and it
moves the slave piston with little effort, so that doesn't seem to be it.
