Hi Staton. That sounds like a great project.

According to Ian Falloon in his book "Ducati Supersport", the 1996 SP frame was "916 gold". Wheels were the same as on the Superlight of that year, that is, silver-grey. I have a '95 SP in those colours.

Cheers

Howdy everyone.

I have a question about some details on variances in model designation AND year variations that might be present with Supersport models in the 90's.

My 1994 SSSP is being converted to a sort of restomod after the motor gave up the ghost.  We are putting a 2006 Ducati SR2 1000 motor in it with all the electronics, switch gear, and FI.  Before coming up with this plan, I bought a 1996 Supersport project that needed some work in the thoughts I could make one nice bike from two.

Now that we are going the restomod route, I have the 1996 I want to move it on along to someone else with all the spares.

Here is the concern - I know the history of my 1994 from new to me and the frame is more of a silver color, with CF front and rear fenders, aluminum swingarm, 5.5 rear wheel and the proper front end.

The 1996 model is supposed to be a SS/SP model, BUT it has the red front fender and plastic rear hugger.  It also seems to have a later model rear shock of a Supersport 1000 possibly.  It does have the more silver looking wheels with a 5.5 rear as expected.  The concern is that the frame is more gold in color.  I was told that the gold frames were usually "economy" versions.  The person that told me this based it off his knowledge of 748/916 models. He didn't know it applied to SS models.

Question:  Does anyone know if it is possible the frame color changed from the 1994 Silver to the 1996 more gold color on ALL Supersports, or is there any truth to an "economy" frame that was more gold for the CR versions, and silver for the SP's?

I mentioned to those interested in the 96 that I cannot guarantee it is an SP version.  The carfax doesn't designate and I can find where the VIN can decode to that level.  Also, I believe some say the triple clamp number can be used, although I have always been told it can't be relied upon.  One individual said the 96 models usually had an alpha and it looks like my 96 my have been a high number before they switched to the alpha addition.

I have the bike listed on CL and MotoHouston (MH) and a few FB pages.  Here is the MH site if you want to see pics to see what I am talking about with the more gold colored frame.

Thanks for any insights.  I'd feel better if I could tell a potential buyer it is one or the other with some degree of certainty.
