Jim,
You're a much more accomplished rider than myself and I plan on taking it easy, even for myself. I'm tempted to stand up during the Rider's Meeting and say "hey guys, when you roll up on me, just go around, I'm your moving chicane for the weekend." I ride the twisties in the Hill Country as fast as I want to go and clearance is never an issue.
I'm at the point in my life now where I'm not out to prove anything. My only goal is to have fun and get that great pic of cresting Turn 10 with the Mullet (observation tower) in the background.

Mario,
Have fun and be safe. That is always something that pretty much goes hand
in hand. It may have been my road hugging weight that caused some of the
issues. I am jealous you are getting to ride there but my track days are
done. I no long bounce when I fall. I also demonstrated that crashing
sucks and it does not get better with practice.

Mario,
Have fun and be safe. That is always something that pretty much goes hand
in hand. It may have been my road hugging weight that caused some of the
issues. I am jealous you are getting to ride there but my track days are
done. I no long bounce when I fall. I also demonstrated that crashing
sucks and it does not get better with practice.

"road hugging weight"...hahahaha... My SS was out of commission for a couple of years during which time I rode my GSXR-750. After I got the SS back together and took it out for a blast, it just didn't seem as fast as it used to be. I thought "hmm...must be the 35lbs I've put on..." I also thought that perhaps it didn't feel as fast in comparison to the GSXR, on which I enjoyed many rapid rides.
When I got back from Kuwait in 2018, my friend Jeff Foster (RIP) convinced me to take it to his ace Ducati technician. Which I did. When I got it back, holy moly was it fast! It wasn't the 35lbs (which I still had), it was just the state of tune.
So, I'm 61yrs old and wanted to do a couple of track days before I got too old. I'm doing this COTA event and maybe, one or two smaller tracks next year. Maybe. Then I think that itch will be scratched.

Mario, that generation of Ducati is an excellent track day tool. Light and not something that will over power you but enough to have fun. One thing to watch out for is the exhaust collector under the motor. Where the piped exit to the side and then head to the rear of the bike can be a clearance issue. If you hit it hard enough you can lift the rear wheel off the ground. Ask me how I know. đ±đ Fortunately after much excitement I did not go down but I got those pipes shortened right after that and added a shock from the next series SS which is about a half inch longer. You can see how little clearance there is in this photo.

I'll report my impressions here after my track day.

Definitely some bumps, coming down the hill from turn 1 into 2 there were several that went down after hitting that bump not sure about other sections of the track.
There is another bump on the straight after turn 2 but it did not seem to be a problem, but then I'm just some old dude that did track days, so on a GP machine it also might be a problem. - Gene

I am 75 and about 195 pounds and did my last track weekend about three
years ago. The fun at track days is how fast you go around the corners,
not how fast you go on the straights. Anyone can go fast in the
straights. We had one rider in our club that gave up track days when he
turned 80! It is not how old you are, it is how old you feel. After my
last get off I found myself going slower and working harder to do it. That
is when I sold my track day bike and all my track day gear. I went to a
friend's track day to take pictures last month and the itch is back. I have
resisted it so far.
HAVE FUN.

I'll report my impressions here after my track day.

Definitely some bumps, coming down the hill from turn 1 into 2 there were
several that went down after hitting that bump not sure about other
sections of the track.
There is another bump on the straight after turn 2 but it did not seem to
be a problem, but then I'm just some old dude that did track days, so on a
GP machine it also might be a problem. - Gene

During the broadcast on Motogp.com, I heard them say that if the track
wasnât fixed they wouldnât be back. So for them to have it ready for April,
they have to get going on the resurfacing in the not too distant future I
would think. Fingers crossed. Gregg

Mario
I am 75 and about 195 pounds and did my last track weekend about three
years ago. The fun at track days is how fast you go around the corners,
not how fast you go on the straights. Anyone can go fast in the
straights. We had one rider in our club that gave up track days when he
turned 80! It is not how old you are, it is how old you feel. After my
last get off I found myself going slower and working harder to do it. That
is when I sold my track day bike and all my track day gear. I went to a
friend's track day to take pictures last month and the itch is back. I have
resisted it so far.
HAVE FUN.

I used to race many, many moons ago. Not for very long or very well, but I've always been drawn to the track and going around corners fast. Going fast in a straight line has its place but has never held a great hold on me. Sure, it's fun to wick it up every now and then but it's not much of a challenge.
Over the last week and a half, I met on different occasions a 79 and 80 yrs old gentlemen who still ride and they are an inspiration. I hope I last that long and am still riding too! I was talking to the 80yr old and telling him about the upcoming MotoGP race and my plan to do a track day there. His eyes got wide and he started asking me questions about how he too could do a track day! What a guy!

I am 75 and about 195 pounds and did my last track weekend about three years ago. The fun at track days is how fast you go around the corners, not how fast you go on the straights. Anyone can go fast in the straights. We had one rider in our club that gave up track days when he turned 80! It is not how old you are, it is how old you feel. After my last get off I found myself going slower and working harder to do it. That is when I sold my track day bike and all my track day gear. I went to a friend's track day to take pictures last month and the itch is back. I have resisted it so far.
HAVE FUN.

BTW, I'll be doing it on my beloved 1996 900SS/CR.

- Gene

I raced amature from 80 to 86. Like you I did not set the world on fire
but I learned how to ride much better because of it. Have fun and I will
enjoy it vicariously. My old SR 500 Yamaha that taught me how to really
ride a bike. Roebling Road and the international horseshoe at Daytona.

challenge.
Over the last week and a half, I met on different occasions a 79 and 80
yrs old gentlemen who still ride and they are an inspiration. I hope I
last that long and am still riding too! I was talking to the 80yr old and
telling him about the upcoming MotoGP race and my plan to do a track day
there. His eyes got wide and he started asking me questions about how he
too could do a track day! What a guy!

HAVE FUN.

thought that perhaps it didn't feel as fast in comparison to the GSXR, on
which I enjoyed many rapid rides.
When I got back from Kuwait in 2018, my friend Jeff Foster (RIP) convinced
me to take it to his ace Ducati technician. Which I did. When I got it
back, holy moly was it fast! It wasn't the 35lbs (which I still had), it
was just the state of tune.
So, I'm 61yrs old and wanted to do a couple of track days before I got too
old. I'm doing this COTA event and maybe, one or two smaller tracks next
year. Maybe. Then I think that itch will be scratched.

Mario,
Have fun and be safe. That is always something that pretty much goes hand
in hand. It may have been my road hugging weight that caused some of the
issues. I am jealous you are getting to ride there but my track days are
done. I no long bounce when I fall. I also demonstrated that crashing
sucks and it does not get better with practice.

Mario
I raced amature from 80 to 86. Like you I did not set the world on fire
but I learned how to ride much better because of it. Have fun and I will
enjoy it vicariously. My old SR 500 Yamaha that taught me how to really
ride a bike. Roebling Road and the international horseshoe at Daytona.

Mario,
My son and I took the 888, 1098S & 900SSCR to COTA in June.
First time there and had a blast!
We'll be doing it again next year.
I'm 61 and rode like shit but had fun!!
My son is 27 and had only been on a track about 5 times and was dragging his knee on both the 1098S & 900SS.

So much content here.
I'm big on corners, so, one of my problems is this; when on the track,
other riders will pass me on the straight, then jam me up with how slow
they are around the next corner.
My '96 900 SSSP, reasonably modified, was a fun track bike, but after I got
on one of Keith Code's BMW S1000R bikes, I put the Duck out for pasture as
far as track days were concerned.
As far as going slow, or fast, or taking it easy. I have never raced, but
during track school days, some riders fly by me, while others get in my
way. It's all okay; I'm not racing, just trying to learn and do a little
better than the last lap. What's a real blast for me is when my track coach
pulls up in front of me, signals me to follow, then takes off into the
distance - "whoa, how am I going to keep up with that?" But, half a lap
later, I find myself doing just that.
Then there's the street. Here's my big problem. I have often gone out for a
ride on my favorite little twisties, saying "I'm going to take it easy
today; just have some fun, not try and scrub off chicken strips." Every now
and then, I can do that, but, usually, after 15 minutes or so, I'm braking
late, hanging off the bike and trying to set up for the flick into the next
bend in the chicane (BTW, it's easy to make myself sound like a much faster
rider than I am). It's just too hard to resist that urge to go a little
faster, get a little deeper - okay; I have to stop now, I'm getting too
excited, and my bike is 5900 miles away.

I used to race many, many moons ago. Not for very long or very well, but
I've always been drawn to the track and going around corners fast. Going
fast in a straight line has its place but has never held a great hold on
me. Sure, it's fun to wick it up every now and then but it's not much of a
What a guy!

HAVE FUN.

thought that perhaps it didn't feel as fast in comparison to the GSXR, on
which I enjoyed many rapid rides.

Mario, that generation of Ducati is an excellent track day tool. Light
and not something that will over power you but enough to have fun. One
thing to watch out for is the exhaust collector under the motor. Where the
piped exit to the side and then head to the rear of the bike can be a
clearance issue. If you hit it hard enough you can lift the rear wheel off
the ground. Ask me how I know. đ±đ Fortunately after much excitement I
did not go down but I got those pipes shortened right after that and added
a shock from the next series SS which is about a half inch longer. You can
see how little clearance there is in this photo.

Brian, yes you th does that doesn't it. I took my son for his first track
day ever and by the afternoon he was turning in lap times better than my
all-time best on that same motorcycle. I never took him again :-) actually
he got married and had children and decided he didn't want to do track days.

Mario,
My son and I took the 888, 1098S & 900SSCR to COTA in June.
First time there and had a blast!
We'll be doing it again next year.
I'm 61 and rode like shit but had fun!!
My son is 27 and had only been on a track about 5 times and was dragging
his knee on both the 1098S & 900SS.

I'm doing a track day at COTA in November. All this talk about a bumpy,
dangerous track was scaring me until I realized I will be going about 1/3rd
of the Moto3 pace. And that's me full blast! hahahaha... I think I'll be
ok. I'm still a little nervous as I haven't been on a track since 2001 and
that was at Blackhawk Farms, not exactly a high speed circuit.
I'll report my impressions here after my track day.
BTW, I'll be doing it on my beloved 1996 900SS/CR.

Gregg

Hey Mario,
Consider asking for a vest so that other riders know to be especially
careful around you if you're that nervous. It's the universal symbol for
"don't f*ck with this guy".
