Help with ancestral sites County Tyrone

JT

I am looking for someone who can help me pinpoint ancestral sites in County Tyrone and County Derry for an upcoming trip in Fall 2022.
Surnames are Cathcart, Marshall, Alexander, Cousley, Steele

My Great, great grandfather John Marshall Cathcart was born in either Cookstown or Pomeroy March 11, 1842. He came to United States about 1860. His parents are Gabriel Cathcart (born 1817) and Hester Marshall Cathcart (born 1818). Hester’s widowed mother, Letitia Marshall, was an innkeeper in Pomeroy in 1839. Gabriel Cathcart was living near Magherafelt in 1839 when he and Hester Marshall married. The Cathcart, Cousley, and Steele families are also associated with Springlane Farm, Ballymuckleheany, County Derry.

Sarah Alexander, my great great grandmother, born in either Pomeroy or Belfast, joined a brother or uncle in the United States. There she married John Marshall Cathcart.

Is there a local person who can help me with local sites? Connections with cousins would be a bonus.

Thank you

Have you tried Griffiths Valuation to see if you could locate family farms. If you can get close you could then visit local post offices and they might help locate relatives  ( worked for me when I went).

Hi Julia,

An easy one!  The "ancestral sites" which you are looking for are called

As you can see, this information comes from the 1859 land survey known as
the Griffiths Valuation and one of the great assets of this record is that
it pinpoints the exact location of almost every household in Ireland.  It
is online here and comes with both original maps and modern overlays so you
can easily find the location for yourself:
https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

These records were updated regularly up until circa 1930 so you can see
what happened to every plot of land and every house.  Sadly, your Cathcarts
ceased to hold this land when Gabriel died.  He is scored out in 1870 so
presumably died some time before that and is replaced by Patrick McAnally.
Patrick might have married into the Cathcarts, though I doubt it, he
probably bought the farm.

Email me if you need any further help.  (boydgray26@gmail.com)

Boyd,
Thank you for this detailed information.

About selling the farm in 1870 - thank you for that information. Our family records for our direct line don’t include a Patrick McNally.

Gabriel Cathcart died in 1902 at age 83 when he was living with his daughter and son-in-law Charlotte and Samuel Walker in Belfast.
Gabriel’s wife Hester Marshall Cathcart died January 26, 1880 in Pomeroy

Thank you again.

As you can see, this information comes from the 1859 land survey known as the Griffiths Valuation and one of the great assets of this record is that it pinpoints the exact location of almost every household in Ireland.  It is online here and comes with both original maps and modern overlays so you can easily find the location for yourself:
https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

These records were updated regularly up until circa 1930 so you can see what happened to every plot of land and every house.  Sadly, your Cathcarts ceased to hold this land when Gabriel died.  He is scored out in 1870 so presumably died some time before that and is replaced by Patrick McAnally.  Patrick might have married into the Cathcarts, though I doubt it, he probably bought the farm.

Email me if you need any further help.  (boydgray26@gmail.com mailto:boydgray26@gmail.com)

The "ancestral sites" which you are looking for are called Gortnagarn and Cavanakeeran. Gabriel Cathcart lived on Plot 35 Gornagarn and had a large farm in Cavanakeeran. > > Griffith's Valuation Record Information > Tenant > Family Name 1 CATHCART > Forename 1 GABRIEL > Landlord > Family Name 2 LOWRY > Forename 2 ROBERT W. > Location > County TYRONE > Barony DUNGANNON, MIDDLE & UPPER > Union COOKSTOWN > Parish POMEROY > Townland GORTNAGARN > Place Name GORTNAGARN > Place Type TOWNLAND > Publication Details > Position on Page 7 > Printing Date 1859 > Act 15&16 > Sheet Number 37 > Map Reference 35 > > Griffith's Valuation Record Information > Tenant > Family Name 1 CATHCART > Forename 1 GABRIEL > Landlord > Family Name 2 LOWRY > Forename 2 ROBERT W. > Location > County TYRONE > Barony DUNGANNON, MIDDLE & UPPER > Union COOKSTOWN > Parish POMEROY > Townland CAVANAKEERAN > Place Name CAVANAKEERAN > Place Type TOWNLAND > Publication Details > Position on Page 3 > Printing Date 1859 > Act 15&16 > Sheet Number 37 > Map Reference 40;41;42 > > As you can see, this information comes from the 1859 land survey known as the Griffiths Valuation and one of the great assets of this record is that it pinpoints the exact location of almost every household in Ireland. It is online here and comes with both original maps and modern overlays so you can easily find the location for yourself: > https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ <https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/> > > These records were updated regularly up until circa 1930 so you can see what happened to every plot of land and every house.
