Sold my 2006 S2R 1000 to a friend.  I have had it for about 13 years and it
was hard to let it go.  What convinced me was how excited he was when he
saw it and even more when he rode it.  In it's current form it is just too
compact riding position for these old bones.  At least I know it will go to
a good home.

Yes, but are the Horsemen of the Apocalypse riding Ducatis? Or, maybe a
Moto Guzzi would be a better marque for this sort of thing; black, of
course.

This story sounds very similar to mine. After riding and loving my '96 900
SS SP for about 13 years, I decided that as much as I loved the bike and
riding it, I had squeezed hours and hours and miles and miles of fun out of
it, and maybe it was time for the bike to start bringing the same joy to a
new owner. A good friend had been lusting after the bike for some years
(like with James' friend, after seeing it and then riding it), so I sold it
to him. Best part of all; he is totally taking care of the bike, down to
fixing every tiny little niggling issue it might have. It's in good hands,
and can go on to bring my friend years of joy.

Speaking of a ’96 900SS going to good hands,… last year while I was rebuilding-ish my ‘95 900 SSCR (bought new at Amol, rode the bejesus out of it, new top end in 2000, moved to LA and on/off the road since 2012, so really deserved some tlc :), I had to pick up a ‘96 900 SSCR to ride in the meanwhile, of course.

My original is quite civilized, all stock except for a pair of cf Remus and stage 1 Dynajet.

The ‘96 I lucked upon is a total hooligan.  Flat slides, mystery brand high pipes, vented clutch, etc… and hard to keep nose down if I’m in a hurry.  So, fun as it may be, I’m now back on the ‘95, and ready to release the hooligan back into the wild.  Or not?  Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Ah, my '96 SSSP. I think that Richard Thompson could have easily written a
song about this bike as he did about the Vincent Black Lightning.
Obviously, there are much better performing and more reliable bikes built
since then, but there is nothing like the sound and feel of pulling the
throttle on a properly modified 900. By properly, I mean, at least, FCR
carbs, spaghetti exhaust, high comp pistons, porting; and, while you're at
it, throw in a lightened flywheel and light wheels.
Would I choose my 900SSSP for the racetrack? No.
Could I get a bigger thrill canyon scratching on any other bike than that
900? No!
Nuff said.

Ah, my '96 SSSP. I think that Richard Thompson could have easily written a song about this bike as he did about the Vincent Black Lightning. Obviously, there are much better performing and more reliable bikes built since then, but there is nothing like the sound and feel of pulling the throttle on a properly modified 900. By properly, I mean, at least, FCR carbs, spaghetti exhaust, high comp pistons, porting; and, while you're at it, throw in a lightened flywheel and light wheels. Would I choose my 900SSSP for the racetrack? No. Could I get a bigger thrill canyon scratching on any other bike than that 900? No! Nuff said.
