MOTOGP RACE THREAD (may contain spoilers)

I’m with you Gene. A week of racing. And the auction, and parties, and Ducati Day Daytona Ducati Island. CCS. AHRMA and the Daytona 200. Even flat track. The Crazy Drags and the police handing out tickets for wheelies past the Hess station all night like popcorn. And crazy Main Street, burnouts inside of bars and coleslaw wrestling.  And the Rats Hole show.  It really was ridiculously fun. I remember one year when the Ducati party was small and still downtown Ducati was cleaning out the warehouse and they sent me so much swag I could barely give it all away. I was looking thru pics awhile ago and riders that showed up at that party included Troy Bayliss, Anthony Gobert, Ben Bostrom, Nicky Hayden, etc. That week was so important to the bike world everyone went.
And that wasn’t even the really big 200 days, when chartered planes from Europe flew in race fans. And Cook and Phil won the race with a Ducati.

Gene, I was “worried” that we’d be stealing the motogp thread getting off track about Daytona, but now that Ms. Vicki has sounded off, it’s legit, right? Vicki, you called all of that stuff just like it was. I attended Bike Week every year from 1979 through 1999 and then sporadically as the “fun” was taken out of the week, and I was at the track all day every day there was something happening, and on Main St or equivalent at night. When the big fences went up in the infield, when they stopped all the burnouts in the Hooters parking lot across the street, they stopped naked people from riding up Main St and they started giving out tickets for revving your engine my enthusiasm started to wane. Gosh, the tents outside the track, the vendors (I had my first full custom road racing suit specced out by the gals from Bates Leathers in their tent). I still have a beautiful Gia. Co. Moto> shirt I won in one of the drawings at a party you ran. The biggest riders in the world came to compete-all the factories. We strolled through the pits like it was a track day……. oh for those days to return……… the Britten….

I remember the Ducati Days very well, the pic on my FB Page is Nora and I at that place across the street where the Monster Challenge was held.

I have not missed bike week since I got back from Europe in 1982, it helps that my sister finally moved out of Miami up to New Smyrna Beach so I have a place to stay and get to spend time with her.

IMHO it is something that was worth saving instead of letting fall into what it isn't anymore. A real American shame. Anyone going to Indy for Motoamerica? - Gene

I had this conversation with Kenny Roberts and Wayne Rainey.  (this was pre-Moto America when those two were still discussing how (and which one of them) to bring back the AMA series) The question was “could the Daytona 200 be restored to its previous glory.”  The short answer was no, never. The long answer involved descriptions of huge crowds and charter planes full of foreigners from all over Europe and the UK. It was a big deal.

It sure would be a trip to go and experience the whole thing now. I remember years ago when I’d go down, and my wife’s friends would say, “you KNOW you’re husband’s going there because it’s Spring Break week for the kids, not for bike racing…” She would respond, “no, he’s actually there for the racing, and spends every waking moment at the track each day until there’s nothing left to do”.

When I couldn’t get a basic greasy hamburger from a stand at the track and was stuck buying focaccia bread gourmet sandwiches it was the beginning of the end……… the caliber of the racing left a bit to be desired at some point as well. Not to mention all the security yelling, “get away from the fence!!” I have pics of KR et al at speed with my little instamatic that you need million dollar cameras and lenses to get now (in terms of closeness). Safety concerns aside, it was amazing to be able to stand in super dangerous spots anytime you wished to hang out or take pictures.

IMHO it is something that was worth saving instead of letting fall into
