I went down hard on Sunday; I was on my way to attend the Barbara Fritchie Classic https://www.barbarafritchieclassic.com/https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.barbarafritchieclassic.com%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1Pgcrs8qXGkGDHjHyKCZCq0hrgMG0TxlvKiaqjLRQ-6FQ6Dux9jRyJGXU&h=AT10AHfNr0xd00CWzYqd7Dmp6rBZje80_a0Ob3cIIbF_sQIaYOKe3xp2JwX4deWJBrH6xrM_X2Jz8kzDWzVzwFTasmDXvOSukqz6bX_x7aw1IjsQCosJz08wWt0QdHwQZ9o4&__tn__=-UK-R&c[0]=AT2gKqnsgf-Jd94kU8S8VigogrTyJqxq46uqjNzFf52hv_EnV3LEbxMZ0j-XJqupRUevuwJGs-qZceKnoK5pNS_ud7ewCcvRRUR_7h-NaQq6cWO84EZfXN8T_gZnImmw8tzWSe81dBhcVcMBnP4l0yHEJw . I was on a well-used route called Lovettsville Rd, major gravel covering the complete width of the road and about 15' in length. I was traveling about 60 MPH, the gravel was in the shadows I did not even see it until I was on it, front end was floating back and forth and must have been pointed to the right when we hit clear pavement cause it high sided and spit me off, landed on top of helmet and right shoulder. I HAD MY GEAR ON, Bohn armor https://www.bohnarmor.com/.../cool-air-mesh-armored.../https://www.bohnarmor.com/product/cool-air-mesh-armored-riding-pants/?fbclid=IwAR03sJlhZDGi6X_RYXjIwJnSzGbbHo_oD_HvSwDD_KuNLckYHKhiqZvaGy8 underneath my jeans, 1 little scrape on the jeans, RSD leather mesh gloves, Alpinestars mesh Jacket, and Shoei RF1200 full face Helmet. My shoulder and wrist are sore, my arm has a good scratch above the elbow, knee and back are sore. A local told me that road had been like that for several days. No excuse for that amount of gravel to still be in that roadway. Helmet and Jacket have to be replaced; they did their job. I'll be switching to using my perforated leather jacket all the time. - Gene

Wow! Sorry to hear about this, Gene.
I was up in Malibu about 20+ years ago and had a similar experience. Hit
sand while leaned over mid turn. Shady area and never saw it. High side and
landed on my head. Was unconscious for 15 minutes or so, until the
paramedics arrived. Life flight to UCLA trauma center and kept under
observation. Took months for my memory to get back to whatever can be
considered normal. Short term memory was the issue
Glad to hear you came out of this in one piece.
What bike were you riding?
My beloved Victory Sportccruiser, a rare beast. They only made them 2 years 2000-2001. Mine is a 2001 Speed Yellow with White Stripes, there are only 30 made in that color combo. An example of that bike was used to do the sighting lap for 2 years for every AMA Superbike Race.
I was riding that bike to go to the Barbara Fritchie Classic, oldest motorcycle race in USA. I had a good riding buddy, Bill Bowen, who was riding his Sportcruiser to meetup with Nora and I, also on my Sportcruiser, in 2008. Bill had a heart attack on the way and passed on the scene. We adopted the road where he passed and do road cleanup 3 times a year and I always ride my Sportcruiser to that race.

From your description, I think you’re probably counting your blessings. Sounds like you could have been seriously f*cked up. Glad you’re able to write about it. Sucks when you’re a victim of other people’s shit, incompetence or lack of vision about what their actions/lack thereof have caused.

Was Nora with you on this trip? You didnt mention her…. I hope she’s ok also!
Yes.. dress for the slide, not the ride.

So the adjuster says we'll cover everything goes through some procedural stuff, asks for some pictures, and ends that he is writing it up as failure to control my motorcycle.
I lost it and told him a few choice things and finished with as a Certified Motorcycle Safety Instructor I would be prepared to testify that said motorcyclist had no available options. Had he seen the gravel he could execute no avoidance maneuvers, the entire roadway was covered in deep gravel. Further given the shaded nature of the roadway it was not visible and once on it, the reaction of the motorcycle was immediate as evidence by the fact that rider and motorcycle separated in less than 75 feet from the end of the gravel, which is less than a second.
I cannot help but wonder what his training is and if even rides.
