Is anyone aware of the best way to check the gravestones in a graveyard if I can’t go in person? I know the records for the Drumquin Presbyterian church only go back to 1845, but does the graveyard go back further? How can I check?

Thanks,
Katherine Quigley

Katherine,
I do not know the answer to your question, however, I do have one for you.  I know Quigley is a very popular Irish name and my Grandmother was a Quigley.  Most of her ancestors were from Glin, County Clare.  Are yours in Tyrone or possibly from Glin?

Hello Katherine

To the best of my knowledge, Drumquin Presbyterian Church tombstones are late 1800's and 1900's.  In earlier times, part of Castlederg and Pettigo.

Any particular surnames that you are looking for?

Katherine,

My guide to Presbyterian congregations says there has been one at Drumquin since the 1600s. It also mentions that a new church was built between 1860 – 1863 after which the old church became the Manse (ie the Minister’s home). I would guess therefore that the graveyard does go back earlier than 1845.

Presbyterians generally didn’t keep burial records so there are unlikely to be any paper records for who is buried there. You just have to hope there’s a legible gravestone. You could try writing to the Minister to see if anyone has ever transcribed them or if he knows of a grave for your family. Otherwise you may just have to pay a researcher to go and look.

Not every Minister replies to these enquiries. Some get rather more genealogical enquiries than they feel able to deal with. On the other hand some are very obliging.

There are some e-books that can be purchased where people have
transcribed various graveyards... I had several "good hits" which have
later been proven accurate via picture sent to me.

The e-book I purchased is for County Leitrim, though I see many other
counties including Tyrone listed:
https://kabristanbookshop.com/product/ireland-publications/county-leitrim-burials-from-1760-part-3-pdf-format/

I don't know if there are other sources for this data, I purchased this
(only £5!) early in my genealogy work.

Based on a quick search I do see a link here which lists MANY graveyards
by county, and indicates whether published online or not (change the
county name in the URL if you want something different, or just use the
site search):
https://www.johngrenham.com/records/county_graveyards.php?search_type=full&county=Tyrone

Ideally some of this is useful!

Best, Dave

I agree with Dave that the Kabristan bookshop books / pdfs are very useful having had the ones for County Leitrim for many years as they have helped to confirm & add to the research for my Wife’s Ancestors as they had a large presence in that County.

Another very useful resource is www.igp-wweb.com http://www.igp-wweb.com  which has listings with photos of many graveyards. The link for Tyrone is:

Thank you so much for all your replies. I know that my 4th-great
grandfather, Andrew Quigley, lived in County Tyrone at the time of his
death in 1847. He was originally from Athlone in County Westmeath, but he
moved to County Tyrone after he became a pensioner after his service in the
Royal Artillery. His son, James Quigley, was married in the Drumquin
Presbyterian Church in 1848. I was hoping to find a gravestone for Andrew
and also see if maybe he had any children buried near him that I haven't
found other records for.

I have been in contact with the minister at that church, and he said there
was a cemetery, but no death records. Does anyone have a researcher to
recommend to look through the cemetery for me?

I agree with Dave that the Kabristan bookshop books / pdfs are very useful
having had the ones for County Leitrim for many years as they have helped
to confirm & add to the research for my Wife’s Ancestors as they had a
large presence in that County.

Another very useful resource is www.igp-wweb.com which has listings with
photos of many graveyards. The link for Tyrone is:

There are some e-books that can be purchased where people have transcribed
various graveyards... I had several "good hits" which have later been
proven accurate via picture sent to me.

The e-book I purchased is for County Leitrim, though I see many other
counties including Tyrone listed:

https://kabristanbookshop.com/product/ireland-publications/county-leitrim-burials-from-1760-part-3-pdf-format/

I don't know if there are other sources for this data, I purchased this
(only £5!) early in my genealogy work.

Based on a quick search I do see a link here which lists MANY graveyards
by county, and indicates whether published online or not (change the county
name in the URL if you want something different, or just use the site
search):

https://www.johngrenham.com/records/county_graveyards.php?search_type=full&county=Tyrone

Ideally some of this is useful!

Best, Dave

Katherine,

My guide to Presbyterian congregations says there has been one at Drumquin
since the 1600s. It also mentions that a new church was built between 1860
– 1863 after which the old church became the Manse (ie the Minister’s
home). I would guess therefore that the graveyard does go back earlier than
1845.

Presbyterians generally didn’t keep burial records so there are unlikely
to be any paper records for who is buried there. You just have to hope
there’s a legible gravestone. You could try writing to the Minister to see
if anyone has ever transcribed them or if he knows of a grave for your
family. Otherwise you may just have to pay a researcher to go and look.

Not every Minister replies to these enquiries. Some get rather more
genealogical enquiries than they feel able to deal with. On the other hand
some are very obliging.

Katherine,
The link Dave provided says that the UHF have transcribed Drumquin Presbyterian’s gravestones. I had a look on their site and there are no legible Quigleys in that graveyard (parish is Longfield East). Indeed there are no Quigleys in Tyrone on that site.

Elwyn   On Monday, 29 May 2023, 20:35:47 BST, Katherine Quigley via CoTyroneList <cotyronelist@list.cotyroneireland.com> wrote:     Is anyone aware of the best way to check the gravestones in a graveyard if I can’t go in person? I agree with Dave that the Kabristan bookshop books / pdfs are very
useful having had the ones for County Leitrim for many years as they
have helped to confirm & add to the research for my Wife’s Ancestors
as they had a large presence in that County.

Another very useful resource is www.igp-wweb.com
http://www.igp-wweb.com which has listings with photos of many
graveyards. The link for Tyrone is:
