I know that my fathers family always claimed to be Methodist Episcopal;
which would certainly align with your description.

Rick,

I don’t have any specific knowledge of Methodism in Canada, but it was
established by members of the Church of Ireland/England who broke away
to form a separate denomination.  Charles Wesley didn’t want that. He
wanted Methodism to be a way of promoting religious adherence whilst
remaining part of the Church of England & Ireland. However that didn’t
happen, but in Ireland it took a long time for the split to be complete.

There was considerable resistance to separating from the Church of
Ireland. It was 1815 before Methodists started to conduct their own
baptisms.  Because of continuing loyalty and other factors, many
continued to use the Church of Ireland for baptisms for years after
this and it was 1871 before all Methodists routinely performed their own.

For Methodist marriages, the earliest that I am aware of, date from
1835 (Belfast Donegall Square, the first Methodist church in Ireland).
However in the mid 1800s there were only a few Methodist Ministers
(Methodism relied heavily on lay preachers). So that shortage led to
the continuing practice of marrying in the Church of Ireland. In
addition, in the early years, many Methodist Meeting Houses were not
licensed for marriages so that too contributed to couples marrying in
the Church of Ireland.

So to summarise, the two denominations are close to each other, and
were once the same. So moving from Church of England to Methodist, or
vice versa, wasn’t a very big step. (The Church of Ireland and
Methodist congregations in Lisburn, Co. Antrim share the same church).

In tracing the paths of my ten great aunts and uncles who were the
last generation to be born on our family farm in C.T., I have
found that one of my great uncles emigrated to Canada (late
19-teens) and was a farmer in the area of Simcoe County. He
married a woman who was from a neighboring townland back in C.T.
who had also emigrated to the area. I am wondering if Simcoe
County (or that region outside Toronto in general) was an area
that attracted Ulstermen at that time, and perhaps an ethnic
community had evolved. I also noticed that on his marriage
certificate his religious affiliation was listed as Church of
England, although he had been raised Methodist back in NI ... any
 comments on that?

 Thanks!!

In tracing the paths of my ten great aunts and uncles who were the last generation to be born on our family farm in C.T., I have found that one of my great uncles emigrated to Canada (late 19-teens) and was a farmer in the area of Simcoe County. He married a woman who was from a neighboring townland back in C.T. who had also emigrated to the area. I am wondering if Simcoe County (or that region outside Toronto in general) was an area that attracted Ulstermen at that time, and perhaps an ethnic community had evolved. I also noticed that on his marriage certificate his religious affiliation was listed as Church of England, although he had been raised Methodist back in NI ... any comments on that?
Thanks!!

In tracing the paths of my ten great aunts and uncles who were the last

my great uncles emigrated to Canada (late 19-teens) and was a farmer in the
area of Simcoe County. He married a woman who was from a neighboring
townland back in C.T. who had also emigrated to the area. I am wondering if
Simcoe County (or that region outside Toronto in general) was an area that
attracted Ulstermen at that time, and perhaps an ethnic community had
evolved. I also noticed that on his marriage certificate his religious
affiliation was listed as Church of England, although he had been raised
Methodist back in NI ... any comments on that?

Thanks!!

That is the address for the witnesses. Below the seal it reads Joseph Morrison of Twp of Tecumseth in the County of Simcoe in the province of Ontario.
In the field "Residence when married" it says Cookstown R.R. 3 for both of them ... so maybe they were. I think she may have emigrated there from C.T. specifically to marry him.

Actually Cookstown is smack in the middle of Simcoe County. I'm
struggling to read the marriageecord  you sent. It is blurry. Let me see
if I can find iton Family search or Ancestry.

For interest sake, the areas of Tecumseth, West Gwillimbury, Essa and
Innisfil, Cookstown being at the intersection of all 4 townships, were
settled by many Irish folk in the early to mid 1800s. Hence the name
Innisfil. My surnames from Ulster include Wallace, Crawford, Black,
Latimer, Neely, Fagan, Culbert, Johnston to name a few.

Susan.

This question goes out most specifically to Jim McKane since I
understand he hails from the Toronto area, however anyone with
knowledge of the answer should feel free to chime in.

In tracing the paths of my ten great aunts and uncles who were
the last generation to be born on our family farm in C.T., I
have found that one of my great uncles emigrated to Canada
(late 19-teens) and was a farmer in the area of Simcoe County.
He married a woman who was from a neighboring townland back in
C.T. who had also emigrated to the area. I am wondering if
Simcoe County (or that region outside Toronto in general) was
an area that attracted Ulstermen at that time, and perhaps an
ethnic community had evolved. I also noticed that on his
marriage certificate his religious affiliation was listed as
Church of England, although he had been raised Methodist back
in NI ... any comments on that?

     Thanks!!

Actually Cookstown is smack in the middle of Simcoe County. I'm struggling to read the marriageecord  you sent. It is blurry. Let me see if I can find iton Family search or Ancestry. For interest sake, the areas of Tecumseth, West Gwillimbury, Essa and Innisfil, Cookstown being at the intersection of all 4 townships, were settled by many Irish folk in the early to mid 1800s. Hence the name Innisfil. My surnames from Ulster include Wallace, Crawford, Black, Latimer, Neely, Fagan, Culbert, Johnston to name a few. Susan.
